Chelsea Football Club Signs Santos Winger Angelo Gabriel for €15 Million and Loans Him to Strasbourg

Chelsea Football Club has successfully secured the services of Santos winger Angelo Gabriel for a fee of €15 million (£12.95m, $16.38m). The talented Brazilian is expected to sign a five-year contract, pledging his future to the club until 2028.

However, Chelsea intends to further develop the 18-year-old by sending him on loan to Strasbourg, a Ligue 1 side recently acquired by Chelsea's owners.

Angelo Gabriel's transfer is a significant deal, considering that his previous contract with Santos contained a release clause valued at €60 million. However, the clubs have reached an agreement for his sale at the reduced price of €15 million.

Despite Barcelona holding preferential rights to match any offer for Angelo Gabriel since 2022, they are unlikely to make a bid for the player, opening the way for Chelsea to secure his services.

Angelo Gabriel has already showcased his abilities on the field, having made 129 appearances for Santos since his debut in 2020, during which he scored five goals. Additionally, he has represented Brazil at the under-20 level, further highlighting his potential.

If the transfer is completed, Angelo Gabriel will become Chelsea's second acquisition from Brazilian football this year, following the signing of midfielder Andrey Santos from Vasco de Gama in January. However, Andrey Santos faced complications obtaining a work permit, which resulted in him rejoining Vasco de Gama on loan in March ahead of the 2023 Brazilian Serie A season.

As for Strasbourg, they finished 15th in the previous season's Ligue 1 and have been competing in the French top flight since their promotion in 2017. The loan move to Strasbourg will offer Angelo Gabriel an opportunity to gain valuable experience and continue his development.

In addition to Angelo Gabriel, Chelsea is also nearing the completion of a deal for Villarreal forward Nicolas Jackson. The club has already confirmed the arrival of Christopher Nkunku, while notable departures during this transfer window include Edouard Mendy, Mateo Kovacic, Kalidou Koulibaly, and N'Golo Kante.

EPL: There's lack of effort - Lampard slams Chelsea players after latest defeat

Chelsea’s interim boss, Frank Lampard has slammed his players following the 4-1 defeat at Manchester United on Thursday night.

Casemiro, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford all contributed one goal each to beat Frank Lampard’s side and secured their place in next season’s Champions League.

The Blues grabbed a late ‘consolation’ through Joao Felix as Chelsea lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

Kai Havertz and Mykhailo Mudryk missed numerous sitters, while the likes of Wesley Fofana and Lewis Hall struggled to contain Manchester United’s attacking might.

“I understand it’s hard for the coaches this year at the club as it’s a big squad and I’ve lived in that. Sometimes you can say maybe it’s a factor but as a player you have to put it to the side and focus on your own game.

“We have to realise why the club is where it’s at. There’s definitely not a lack of effort. I was fortunate to be here for many years, you can be here next year and see that someone has improved on their standards,” he said. Dailypost

Man U vs Chelsea prediction and odds ahead of Premier League clash

Erik ten Hag can secure Manchester United's place in the Champions League with a result against Chelsea on Thursday night when the two sides meet at Old Trafford. The hosts go into the match three points ahead of Liverpool, who sit in fifth, so a point is needed to confirm United's spot in UEFA's top club competition.

United are the favourites going into this match at 3/5 with Betfred while the Blues are 4/1 to produce a shock and a draw is 16/5. The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last 10 league match against Chelsea though that does feature seven draws and have never gone 11 league matches without defeat against Chelsea.

For the first time since 1996, Chelsea will finish the Premier League in the bottom half of the Premier League table after suffering a 1-0 defeat to heavily rotated champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Frank Lampard's return to the helm in an interim role has not been a successful one and many Chelsea fans will be keen to put the season behind them.

EPL: I feel for Chelsea players - Potter uncovers why Man City succeeded at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea boss, Graham Potter has explained that Manchester City won the Blues 1-0 at Stamford

Bridge because his team “committed too many men too high” to press the visitors.

Potter also said he felt for his Chelsea players, urging them to stick together going forward

after their latest defeat to Man City.

The Englishman watched as Riyad Mahrez’s second-half goal gave Pep Guardiola’s side all three

points against Chelsea.

“It was a much better performance when you consider everything… losing Raheem and Pulisic

early. I am proud of the players in terms of everything they gave,” Potter told Sky Sports.

“It is tough at the moment, I must admit. I feel for the boys, of course. We have to stick

together, it is one of those times.

“For their goal, I thought we committed too many men too high to press them, and then you’ve

to credit their quality. I think Kepa and Marc thought each other could have dealt with it.

“At the same time, emotions are high, that is how it is. You have to ride out any storm and

stay level. I think the crowd today appreciated the performance, our support has been

fantastic.”  Dailypost

EPL: Head coach Potter gives injury update on Chelsea pair, Sterling, Pulisic

Chelsea head coach, Graham Potter has provided an injury update on Raheem Sterling and

Christian Pulisic following his side’s Premier League 1-0 defeat against Manchester City on

Thursday.

Sterling was substituted after just five minutes and could be seen holding his hamstring

following a collision with Man City defender, John Stones during the encounter on Thursday

night at Stamford Bridge.

Pulisic, on the other hand, was also forced off after a crunching tackle from Stones on 22

minutes.

Speaking to beIN SPORTS after Chelsea’s defeat to Pep Guardiola’s side, Potter said: “Raheem

felt the back of his leg when he did a backheel, a strange action, a strange sensation, so

fingers crossed.

The Englishman then spoke to BBC Match of the Day and added: “It is too early to say with

injuries.

“Raheem felt it within the first minute of the game. And then with Christian [Pulisic] we are

hoping it’s not too serious.”

Champions League: UEFA announce fresh sanctions on Chelsea

UEFA have said that Chelsea will not be able to sell tickets for any future Champions League matches at Stamford Bridge, as long as Roman Abramovich is still owner of the club.

This follows the sanctions imposed on Abramovich by the European Union (EU).

The Blues will have to play any future home European games behind closed doors.

Chelsea are away to Lille in the round of 16 second leg on Wednesday night, boasting a 2-0 advantage from the first leg.

If Thomas Tuchel’s men make it into the quarter-final, then whichever leg is at home will be played in front of no supporters.

A UEFA statement on Tuesday read: “UEFA is fully committed to always implementing relevant EU and international sanctions. Our understanding is that the present case is assessed in the context of the licence issued in the UK which allows Chelsea FC to continue minimum football activity whilst providing a safeguard that no financial gain will result for Mr Abramovich.

“We will work with the EU and relevant member states to ensure we have full clarity and remain in lockstep with all relevant and applicable measures in line with latest developments.” Dailypost

EPL: Chelsea to lose six more players following sanctions

Chelsea is facing the prospect of losing some of their academy starlets – including highly rated Xavier Simons – on free transfers.

This is due to the sanctions imposed by the UK government.

The Blues are currently unable to offer contracts to players due to the terms of their special operating license.

The UK Sun reports that six academy youngsters could leave at the end of this season as a result of the restrictions imposed on the club.

One of them is 19-year-old midfielder Simons, who is very highly rated by Chelsea and captained the U-23 team in the UEFA Youth League.

He was handed a start by Thomas Tuchel in a 2-0 win over Brentford in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup in December. Simons was also part of the matchday squad for their third-round FA Cup tie with Chesterfield a month later.

England U-17 World Cup winner George McEachran, who has been at Chelsea since the age of eight, is also in the final months of his contract.

Forward Thierno Ballo, midfielder Dion Rankine and defenders Sam McLelland and Josh Brooking will also free agents at the end of the campaign. Dailypost

EPL: Cut your losses, he hasn’t done enough - Chelsea told to sell top star

Former Leeds United striker, Noel Whelan has urged Chelsea to get striker Romelu Lukaku out of Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Whelan believes Lukaku has not done enough in Chelsea shirt, adding that the West London club should cut their losses by selling the former Manchester United star.

Chelsea signed Lukaku last summer from Inter Milan for a club-record fee to end their issues in front of goal.

But the Belgium international hasn’t been at his best and has failed to create the desired impact the Stamford Bridge faithful expected.

And Whelan believes Chelsea should instead use Kai Havertz to replace Lukaku permanently in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

“With the way Havertz is playing – it becomes a very easy decision for Chelsea. I think he has proven that he can be the number nine for them. He’s been brilliant and has shown real quality,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“We all know that he’s a different style of player to Lukaku, but I think there’s been too much controversy with Lukaku. The interview was just disrespectful, but if that is what he wants – then get him out of the football club and off the wage bill.

“They can then go out there, start again, and get someone who can give you the right attitude to fight and succeed in England and in Europe.

“The whispers don’t lie. He’s very lucky to still get the applause he does at Stamford Bridge because he hasn’t shown anywhere near enough in a Chelsea shirt.” Dailypost

EPL: Chelsea star close to joining Barcelona

Chelsea star, Andreas Christensen, is close to joining Barcelona this year.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona has accelerated their interest in Christensen ahead of his contract expiring during the summer transfer window.

Christensen alongside AC Milana’s Franck Kessie is top of Barcelona’s wish list as they look to improve their squad.

The Danish international joined Chelsea from Brondby in 2012, so a move would see his 10-year stay at Stamford Bridge come to an end.

The 25-year-old has gone on to make more than 150 appearances for Chelsea, helping them win multiple trophies, including last season’s Champions League.

Speaking about his Chelsea contract situation last week, Christensen said: “Things can still be done. Being part of a winning team is all that I want to be as a football player.

“It is hard because of all the talks between the club and my guys, I try to keep it away because I want to focus and it has not changed for me.

“I go on the pitch every day not really thinking about it. I leave that to the club and my guys, and I can focus on playing football.” Dailypost

EPL: Thomas Tuchel ‘disappointed’ as Chelsea plan to sell key player

Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel is disappointed by the club’s decision to sell Antonio Rudiger, Daily Express reports.

The Blues’ director Marina Granovskaia is ready to sell Rudiger, who has emerged as one of Tuchel’s most trusted stars in January

The German centre-back – along with Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen – have become the pillar of Chelsea’s defence.

All three players are, however, out of contract next summer. But while Azpilicueta and Christensen will soon commit to new deals, there is less certainty over Rudiger.

Rudiger is attracting interest from Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Juventus.

If the 28-year-old does not sign a new deal by June 2022, he will leave the club as a free agent, a situation Chelsea do not want.

There is also a feeling at Stamford Bridge that Rudiger is unwilling to extend his contract.

And if there is no resolution by January 1, Granovskaia will put Rudiger up for sale.

As a result, Chelsea will look to rekindle their efforts to bring in Jules Kounde from Sevilla. Dailypost

EPL: Lukaku fire Chelsea to top of table on 2-0 win, Arsenal sink into relegation zone

Romelu Lukaku enjoyed an impressive second debut for Chelsea, as he helped the Champions League winners to a 2-0 win at Arsenal on Sunday.

The 28-year-old returned to the Stamford Bridge this week and was pushed into the starting XI at the Emirates by Thomas Tuchel.

The £98 million record signing opened scoring within 15 minutes, tapping Reece James’ cross from the right into an empty net.

James himself doubled Chelsea’s lead before the break, firing high into the net past Bernd Leno.

The Gunners tried to fight their way back into the game, but Mikel Arteta’s men barely threatened their London rivals, as they suffered their second consecutive defeat this season.

Meanwhile, Tuchel’s men have climbed to the top of the summit, ahead of next week’s trip to Liverpool. Dailypost

Chelsea: Lukaku finally set to inherit Drogba's throne

At the third time of asking, Romelu Lukaku is set to receive a royal welcome at Chelsea.

The Belgian first arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2011 as a little-known 18-year-old attacker from Anderlecht.

After taking the Eurostar train between Brussels and London, Lukaku was presented to the press alongside another promising young signing, Oriel Romeu, who had been prised away from Barcelona.

Lukaku failed to make an impact in west London, though, and was allowed to join Everton on a permanent transfer in 2014, for £28m ($39m).

So impressively did he perform at Goodison Park that Chelsea tried to buy him back just three years later. However, Manchester United won the race for his signature having made Lukaku feel more wanted.

As the summer of 2021 began, though, Chelsea knew that they desperately needed a world-class No.9. They have have just won the Champions League but it was clear that they were still lacking a prolific goalscorer.

Thanks to two sensational seasons at Inter after a dismal end to his Old Trafford career, Lukaku was quickly identified as a target, featuring on an ambitious shortlist that also included Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland, Tottenham's Harry Kane and Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski.

However, despite their financial problems, the Nerazzurri initially made it clear that their star centre-forward wasn't for sale.

As far as the Serie A side were concerned, Achraf Hakimi was the only key player in last season's Scudetto success would would be allowed to leave this summer in order to ease their monetary concerns.

So, Chelsea continued to explore other options. Crucially, though, they maintained an open dialogue with Lukaku's agent Federico Pastorello, who informed them earlier this month that Inter were now willing to negotiate.

A first bid of £85m ($117m) was turned down but Lukaku, who had pledged his allegiance to the Serie A champions earlier in the window, was beginning to open up to the idea of returning to Chelsea.

A phone call from Blues boss Thomas Tuchel effectively sealed the deal, with the German convincing Lukaku that the peak years of his career would be best spent with the European champions than a club struggling to make ends meet.

All that remained was for a fee to be agreed, and Inter eventually accepted an offer of £98 million ($136m). Chelsea, of course, had only paid £10m ($14m) for the striker's services a decade ago but that was of no concern Tuchel.

He admired Lukaku has a player and had never heard anything but good things about the Belgium international from those who had previously worked with him.

Tuchel was only further convinced that Lukaku was the right man to lead his team after their one-one-one. During that call, he got a sense of the drive and determination that turned Lukaku into the player he is today.

He come from humble beginnings in Antwerp. Life was never easy for Lukaku or his brother Jordan, both of whom became professional footballers not just because of their talent, but also their tenacity.

"It’s a relief when you make it after so many years. We also wanted to help out our parents as our family wasn't doing well financially when we were kids," Jordan Lukaku told Goal.

"It was rough, so we were motivated to do more. It’s not normal to have two from a family make it. That’s what pushed us."

Indeed, Yannick Ferrera, one of Lukaku's former coaches at youth-team level at Anderlecht, revealed to Goal that the attacker had a drive that separated him from his peers.

"What was great with him was that he was so hungry," Ferrera explained. "He wanted to train, he wanted to learn, he wanted more.

"He never thought 'I am better than the others.' He thought 'I want to become better than the others, so I must train and work hard.'

"From day one, he was a great kid and I am sure that he is a great man now."

Amid all of the excitement surrounding Lukaku's return, he still has his doubters in England.

He flopped at Manchester United, they say. He doesn't do it in big games, apparently. But that Premier League-centric thinking ignores the massive improvement he enjoyed working under Antonio Conte at Inter.

“He arrived at the right club, at the right time, with the right coach and has developed this incredible maturity," Belgium boss Roberto Martinez told Goal.

“He is no longer just the goalscorer that we all know. He is someone that can affect the game, he can lift players around him. He can really, really influence what you're going to do on the pitch.

“He is still only 28 and his goalscoring record is amazing, but I think Romelu has, most importantly, become a very mature footballer in the last 14 months."

Everything seems to have finally fallen into place for both Lukaku and Chelsea.

The boy who arrived at Stamford Bridge 10 years ago hoping to emulate his idol Didier Drogba looks perfectly placed to belatedly realise his dream.

As the 'King of Chelsea' tweeted after Lukaku's return was confirmed, "He's coming home!"

And a fittingly royal welcome awaits. (Goal)
