The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted a lengthy interrogation on Monday with the former Minister of Social Development, Disaster Management, and Humanitarian Affairs, Sadiya Umar-Farouk, regarding accusations of fraud.

A reliable source within the EFCC confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the former minister willingly appeared at the commission's headquarters on Monday morning.

"The former minister upheld her commitment to attend the commission's invitation concerning the alleged misappropriation of a multibillion-naira social intervention fund during her tenure," stated the source.

The source indicated that Umar-Farouk might be allowed to return home initially and might be required to come back for further questioning on Tuesday.

"She might not be detained immediately; there is a possibility she will be allowed to go home, but it will be late, and she has been instructed to report again tomorrow (Tuesday) morning for additional interrogation," the source added.

The ongoing EFCC investigation focuses on the alleged laundering of a substantial N37.1 billion by officials of the ministry during Umar-Farouk's time as minister.

A week ago, the EFCC also questioned Mrs. Halima Shehu, the suspended National Coordinator, and Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), which falls under the ministry's supervision.

Mr García served as president from 1985 to 1990 and again from 2006 to 2011.
Officers had been sent to arrest him in connection with the allegations.
Interior Minister Carlos Morán told reporters that when police arrived, Mr García asked to make a phone call and went into a room and closed the door.
Minutes later, a shot rang out, Mr Morán said. Police forced the door open and found Mr García sitting on a chair with a bullet wound to his head.

Mr García underwent emergency surgery in the Casimiro Ulloa hospital in Lima.
Health Minister Zulema Tomás said Mr García had to be resuscitated three times after suffering cardiac arrests before finally succumbing to his injuries.

In a post on Twitter, Mr Vizcarra said he was "shocked" by the former president's death and sent his condolences to his family. BBC

Ethiopia arrests 59 in corruption crackdown

Ethiopian authorities have arrested 59 government officials on suspicion of corruption and economic sabotage, the attorney-general said on Friday, in the latest sweeping crackdown by the administration.

Berhanu Tsegaye said those arrested in an operation on Thursday included the head and other staff of the government’s Public Procurement and Property Disposal Service, while others worked in what was previously the Finance, Economics and Cooperation ministry.

“We found properties, such as title deeds of houses held by the suspects, which are beyond their income,” Berhanu said.

After taking office last year, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed promised to clean up state-owned firms and the military, and canceled many contracts for its military-run industrial conglomerate METEC.

In November, Ethiopia arrested more than 60 officials, some from the intelligence services and some from METEC.

In January, the former head of METEC was charged with corruption, making him the most senior official to be charged after the arrests.

The latest arrests follow a three-month investigation, and included officials from the Pharmaceuticals Fund and Supply Agency and the Ethiopian Water Works Construction Enterprise, Berhanu said. (NAN)
