ASUU Raises Concerns Over FG's Plan to Establish 47 New Universities

ASUU, University of Ibadan, Federal Universities, Education Concerns, Government Funding, Higher Education in Nigeria, National Assembly, IPPIS Controversy, Scholarships, Academic Staff Union

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Ibadan (UI) is expressing discontent with the National Assembly's proposal to create an additional 47 federal universities.

In an interview on Tuesday, January 9, ASUU Chairman in UI, Prof. Ayo Akinwole, shared his concerns while awarding scholarships to deserving students in Ibadan. Akinwole questioned the rationale behind creating more universities when the government is grappling to adequately fund the existing 52 universities.

"When we think about adding 47 more universities, we begin to wonder about the objective. The objective cannot be noble at all. If it is noble, you would see the seriousness in the way the government is handling the existing ones," Akinwole expressed.

He further urged the House of Representatives and the federal government to address the fundamental question: "Why are they establishing 47 new universities when they have not taken care of the ones we have?"

Akinwole dismissed the removal of tertiary institutions from IPPIS (Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System) as mere 'noisemaking,' highlighting that there has been no official communication to the universities on this matter.

"As we speak, no letter has been communicated, either to the bursary or the heads of the institutions. All we have been seeing is so much motion without movement," Akinwole stated.

Additionally, he refuted claims that the government had not paid them four months' salaries, challenging the accuracy of such assertions.

Corona students win $2m scholarships

Some students of Corona Secondary School, Agbara, Ogun State, have won $2m scholarships from three awards.

The awards are the Council of British International Schools Award, National History Award and the Association for International Schools Awards.

A statement by the school said Jay Esemudje, who was the Head Prefect was the recipient of the COBIS award and the only student awarded the AISA award in the whole of Africa with over $600,000 worth of scholarship.

Another student, Tamara Akika, also got the COBIS award; the third COBIS award recipient was Kenechukwu Ozoemene; the overall winner of the NHA in Nigeria was Oyindoubra Akika, while Toluwanimi Sonuga also got the NHA award.

Speaking at the award presentation, the Principal of the CSS, Mrs Chinedum Oluwadamilola, noted that the students had made the school proud with their diligence and commitment to success,  adding  that the school had always in its capability  provided a good platform for the students to achieve an outstanding academic result.

Oluwadamilola said, “This is an event where we are celebrating excellence.”
We have been participating in The National History competition for the past six years and at various levels we have won. We have been winners at senior and junior categories but this is the first time we are combining both  at the national level with one of our students won overall scoring 100 per cent.

“The other award, AISA, for the first time we won an award for excellence and for the second time we won again.”

“COBIS award cuts across various nations of the world. The award is in six categories and each school is expected to put in only three: nominations and talk about what the students have done with evidence. We went in for three and we won the three.”

“Despite the fact that the final year students are yet to write their WAEC exams because of the pandemic, the three COBIS winners already have admissions in International universities. They all have admissions in about 15 schools with scholarships already.  The scholarships are not based on only their academic performances but also all the different things they do aside from academics. And if we sum the worth of all the scholarships, we have over $2m dollars’ worth scholarships awarded to some of our students”.

Coordinator, National History Competitions, Mr James Onimisi, said, “We are here to celebrate our students in the just concluded history award. The overall student is from Corona Secondary school. With what I have seen, they have good teachers around and they have teachable students. As we have seen, the overall best student is not offering history.

The History and Sociology Teacher, Mr Olusanjo Fagbohungbe, who supervised the students for the NHA, applauded the students for their hard work towards success and the school for supporting the students at all times. Punch
