ASUU Raises Concerns Over FG's Plan to Establish 47 New Universities

ASUU, University of Ibadan, Federal Universities, Education Concerns, Government Funding, Higher Education in Nigeria, National Assembly, IPPIS Controversy, Scholarships, Academic Staff Union

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Ibadan (UI) is expressing discontent with the National Assembly's proposal to create an additional 47 federal universities.

In an interview on Tuesday, January 9, ASUU Chairman in UI, Prof. Ayo Akinwole, shared his concerns while awarding scholarships to deserving students in Ibadan. Akinwole questioned the rationale behind creating more universities when the government is grappling to adequately fund the existing 52 universities.

"When we think about adding 47 more universities, we begin to wonder about the objective. The objective cannot be noble at all. If it is noble, you would see the seriousness in the way the government is handling the existing ones," Akinwole expressed.

He further urged the House of Representatives and the federal government to address the fundamental question: "Why are they establishing 47 new universities when they have not taken care of the ones we have?"

Akinwole dismissed the removal of tertiary institutions from IPPIS (Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System) as mere 'noisemaking,' highlighting that there has been no official communication to the universities on this matter.

"As we speak, no letter has been communicated, either to the bursary or the heads of the institutions. All we have been seeing is so much motion without movement," Akinwole stated.

Additionally, he refuted claims that the government had not paid them four months' salaries, challenging the accuracy of such assertions.

South Africa's National Assembly Approves Contentious Universal Health Coverage Bill, Raising Concerns and Opposition

South Africa's National Assembly has passed a controversial bill to introduce universal health coverage in the country.

South Africa's health minister, Joe Phaahla, hailed the approval of the bill as "a historic step" for the legislation that had been in the pipeline for twelve years.

The opposition fears that the already overburdened public health system will collapse if the new legislation comes into force.

Leading opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), denounced the move saying that nine million of the 60 million South Africans who have medical insurance "would have to be covered by an already overburdened public health system".

In Africa's leading industrial power, public hospitals are often overcrowded and under-resourced or understaffed.

The most privileged often turn to the private sector.

INEC: National assembly wants voting right for married underage girls

The national assembly joint committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is recommending that married underage girls be recognised as eligible voters.

Nigeria’s constitution currently pegs the eligible age for voting at 18.

The national assembly joint panel made the recommendation to a technical committee which will work on the new electoral act proposed by the federal lawmakers.

The technical committee is made up of lawyers, lawmakers, INEC officials and civil society organisations (CSOs).

At a public hearing organised by the joint panel about two weeks ago, some stakeholders recommended that married underage girls should be considered as voters.

Speaking at the inauguration of the technical committee in Abuja, Kabiru Gaya, chairman of the senate committee on INEC, said the recommendation is a unanimous decision by the joint panel.

“The joint committee has proposed that if a lady who is not up to 18 years is married, she should be considered to be mature enough and be eligible to vote,” Gaya said.

But Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, said the issue of voting age is a constitutional matter, adding that the law also recognises 18 as marriageable age.

In response, Aisha Dukku, chairperson of the house of representatives committee on INEC, said the recommendation cannot be thrown out because it was suggested by stakeholders at the public hearing.

“It is already in the electoral act amendments submitted in the last assembly, so it cannot be thrown away just like that,” the chairperson said.

“We should look at it and come up with something instead of throwing it away. It is not from us but from the stakeholders on the day of the public hearing held in the 8th assembly.”

Thereafter, Yakubu said INEC would work with the federal lawmakers to amend the country’s electoral act before the first quarter of 2021.

Electronic voting will be backed up by law if the national assembly passes this amendment and the president assents to it. TheCableng

News: The presidential and national assembly elections ended 10-0 – Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed

The presidential and national assembly elections ended 10-0 – Lai Mohammed
Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed has described the victory of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, as a total one which could be described as 10-0.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, as the winner of the March 9 elections.
At the final declaration held in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, APC polled a total of 331,546, while PDP polled 114,754 vote.
Reacting, Mohammed in a statement described the victory of APC in the governorship election as the fall of ‘Berlin wall of Kwara politics’
The minister noted that APC’s victory in Kwara will be a reference point in the ‘political history of Nigeria, and a hard blow to those who willfully turned the public treasury into their personal piggy bank’.
The statement reads: “The elections are over in Kwara State, and it is a clean sweep for our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). It is also a great victory for all the good people of Kwara.
“The Presidential and National Assembly elections ended 10-0 (3 Senatorial, 6 House of Representatives and 1 Presidential). Then the Governorship and House of Assembly election ended 25-0 (All 24 House of Assembly seats and 1 Governorship). The result is 35-NIL! Our brooms have swept the state clean!
“The long battle for the emancipation of Kwara started on Nov. 17th 2018, when our great party won the by-election for the Ekiti/Oke-ero/Irepodun/Isin federal constituency. The day after that victory, we told our people that it was the beginning of the fall of the ‘Berlin Wall’ of Kwara Politics. On Feb. 18th 2019, while responding to a derisive statement issued by Dr. Doyin Okupe on behalf of his boss, Dr. Bukola Saraki, we said the ‘O To Ge’ movement that fired the imagination of our people is set to finally bring down the ‘Berlin Wall’ of political hegemony in Kwara State and send Dr. Okupe’s boss into political oblivion. I am sure they laughed at us then.

Election: INEC declares Benue governorship election inconclusive
“And On February 25th, 2018, the day after the Presidential Election, we said that the ‘Berlin Wall’ of Kwara Politics that first cracked on Nov. 17th, 2018 has cracked further, and will be finally brought down on March 9th. Today, we can confidently say that the ‘Berlin Wall’ of Hegemony Politics in Kwara has finally fallen, and it’s for good.
“First, we give all gratitude to God for this victory. It is beyond our power. Then, of course, we thank most sincerely the good people of Kwara. To the long-suffering people of Kwara, this is your victory. You worked hard for it. You made incredible sacrifices, and your efforts paid off. You said ‘O To Ge’ and it came to pass.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the good people of Kwara. Never again will anyone enslave you under the guise of dynasty or hegemony politics. Never Again!!!
“We thank the security agencies that provided the conducive atmosphere for our people to exercise their franchise without fear. We thank the leadership of our party at both the state and national levels. And our special gratitude goes to President Muhammadu Buhari, whose leadership and unflinching support propelled us to victory.
“Our victory here transcends Kwara State. It is a victory for all advocates of good governance everywhere. It is the triumph of good over evil, no matter how long it takes. It will forever be a reference point in the political history of Nigeria, and a hard blow to those who willfully turn the public treasury into their personal piggy bank.
“Now, the real work has just begun. The expectations of our people are very high. We cannot afford to disappoint them. We must ride on the wave of their enthusiasm and determination to deliver to them the dividends of democracy, for which they have been yearning. All our leaders, both elected and otherwise, must come together to channel the energy and vibrancy of our people to positive goals.
“We urge our party members and supporters to be magnanimous in victory. Yes, they can celebrate, but there is no room for vindictiveness or hatred. There is no room for violence of any kind. We are all Kwarans. The massive victory in Kwara State came on a peaceful note. We must maintain that and banish all the vestiges of violence from our state.
“It’s a new day in Kwara State, and the sun is shining bright and beautiful once again! I thank you all for your kind attention.”
